J & J Contractors Whole House Makeover to be Featured on Milwaukee/NARI Tour of Remodeled Homes

March 18, 2014

J & J Contractors I LLC, a Greendale, Wis.-based family-owned exterior and interior remodeling services provider, is currently performing a whole house makeover on a Greendale home that will be featured in the Milwaukee/NARI Tour of Remodeled Homes Sat., May 17 – Sun., May 18.

Originally built in the 1960s, the home will receive a total remodel of its 1,600 square feet, with all rooms gutted down to the studs with the exception of the bedrooms. The remodel is scheduled to be completed in just less than three months, with as many as 15 professionals working inside and outside the home at one time. Because of the tremendous amount of activity throughout the house, the homeowners are living in another Greendale property they own while the renovation is taking place.

“The homeowners have lived in Greendale all their life and did not consider buying a new house, because they love the area where they live,” said Jason Cyborowski, vice president of J & J Contractors I, LLC. “Based on J & J Contractors reputation, they knew they would be getting what they wanted.”

The project will include a new roof system using Owens Corning Duration shingles with board and batten cedar siding to match existing exterior elements. Underneath the dimensional shingles will be a water and ice membrane at all eaves and valleys. Approximately 60 percent of the roof system, including trusses, is being removed to make way for the new vaulted trusses for cathedral ceilings. Because the roof will be raised, the existing chimney will be extended with stones that match the home’s exterior. For additional support to the roof’s overhang, a new stone column base will be added outside the front door. A new covered porch will also be created for the front of the house.

The homeowners wanted an open living space that would make all rooms visible to each other and allow for the perfect space for entertaining. To accomplish this, walls are being taken down to make the living room, kitchen, and dining room one open space. In the back of the house, 10-foot walls are being installed which will allow for the addition of larger windows to provide more natural light. To maximize the home’s energy efficiency, a sprayed foam insulation will be added inside the walls in this main part of the house.

The entire space will have hand scraped hardwood floors to add to the continuity, while the custom kitchen area will feature travertine tile and glaze beaded cabinetry. A new eight-foot high cathedral ceiling in the great room will allow the design to feel more open and airy. The room will also have a new fireplace installed with a tile surround, mantel, and side legs with a television mounted above. The bedrooms are getting new doors, trim, hardwood floors, an orange peel knock down finish, and paint.

The home’s siding will be converted to structure vinyl foam back, which will provide a tighter home and newer look. Vinyl shake is being added to the front gables and the home’s exterior will be maintenance free.

J & J Contractors was founded in 1983 as a family roofing business. Today, the company is still family-owned, providing a wide variety of home improvement and remodeling services to southeastern Wisconsin homeowners, including roofing, siding, windows, skylights, additions, kitchens, bathrooms, lower levels, and more.
