The Franklin Combined gymnastics team is way ahead of schedule. The team, made up of gymnasts from Franklin, Muskego, Oak Creek and Whitnall high schools, finished second at the Division 1 state team meet last year after making a late run through big February meets and sectionals.
Brown Deer guard Chris Smith never turned off his defensive motor, holding Whitnall standout Will Pelkofer, who entered the game averaging 27.5 points, to just nine.
"Redemption" is the slogan of the Whitnall girls basketball team this season and, so far, the Falcons have been living up to their word. On Tuesday night, Whitnall found a brand new level of defensive intensity, avenging its only Woodland Conference loss with a commanding victory over Greendale.
Whitnall's veteran team demonstrated poise all evening Tuesday, but especially so down the stretch. The Falcons outlasted host Pewaukee, 41-36, in a battle of Woodland Conference division leaders.
