Sports Wrapups: April 26
Franklin tennis
The Sabers suffered their first two losses of the season at the Waukesha South Quad on April 24.
In 4-3 losses to University School and Verona, the Sabers were swept in singles matches, but won all of their doubles matches.
Brad Heale and CJ Malek won both matches at first doubles, as did Zach Bartels and Kyle Hoffmann at second doubles and Steven Petershack and Eric Bauer at third doubles.
Franklin also defeated the host school, 5-2, behind victories from Jacob Kossoris, Evan Bauer and Mitch DeMario in singles matches and victories from the teams of Bartels and Hoffmann, and Petershack and Eric Bauer.
"The weekend provided a lot of great competition for the singles players," Franklin coach Gail Champion said. "The doubles were also pushed to a number of tie-breakers. The doubles teams were really in sync this weekend and really enjoyed the challenge."
Franklin also picked up a pair of Southeast Conference victories to improve to 3-0 as of Monday. The Sabers swept host Racine Case, 7-0, April 20, and beat visiting Oak Creek, 6-1, two days later.
Greendale soccer
Back-to-back shutouts had the Panthers back to .500 as of Monday.
In the team's best effort of the season, Katarina Radmanovic snapped a scoreless tie with a great assist by Lauren Rutkowski in the 77th minute as Greendale beat host Shorewood, 1-0, April 22.
Goalkeeper Mary Merg registered her second shutout by registering two saves as Greendale improved to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the Woodland Conference.
Two days earlier at home, it was an early goal - Rutkowski's tally in the fourth minute - that gave the Panthers all they needed in a 1-0 win over Brown Deer.
"This very young team continues to improve, even though there have been many injuries," Greendale coach George Knezic said.
Whitnall tennis
A busy slate yielded three conference dual victories in four tries for the Falcons.
First singles player Alex Dundas was part of Whitnall's singles sweep in 5-2 victories at South Milwaukee on April 22 and against visiting Greenfield on April 20.
The Falcons also picked up a 5-2 win at St. Francis on April 21, and lost, 4-3, to New Berlin West on April 19.
Whitnall began this week 3-2 in league play.
Oak Creek golf
Michael Phung and John Rozwadowski's matching meet-medalist rounds of 76 helped Oak Creek to second of eight teams at the Cudahy Skins and Scramble at Evergreen on Saturday.
Oak Creek finished with 88 points in the modified scoring system, second only to Greenfield's 101.
Phung was also the medalist with a 43 in a 180-180 tie with Franklin at Tuckaway Golf Course on Monday.
The Knights struggled at the Oakwood Invitational, coming in last among 12 teams.
Whitnall soccer
The Falcons snapped a three-match losing streak with a 7-2 win over crosstown rival Greenfield at home April 22.
Whitnall junior midfielder Dana Steffen took over with three goals and two assists.
Freshman Ashley Markowiak tallied two goals and an assist, on top of goals from freshman Gagrielle Weis and senior Lisa Donaldson.
Whitnall, which began this week 2-4 overall, 2-2 conference, also suffered a 2-0 home loss to New Berlin West two days earlier.
Greendale golf
The Panthers thought they established themselves as one of the teams to beat in the Woodland Conference West Division by winning the season opener, but a tough showing two days later will make winning the league quite difficult.
In the league season-opener, Greendale tallied a 158, five strokes better than runner-up New Berlin West at Whitnall Park Golf Course on April 20.
Going low for the Panthers were juniors Sean Givens and Ryan Guziewicz, who each carded 38s. Jordan Stachowski (40) and Nolan Benoit (42) also played well.
But two days later at Brown Deer Golf Course, Greendale was 13 strokes behind West and finished fourth, despite Stachowski's 39.
"This week we can't win the conference, but we could lose it," Greendale coach Lance Wenger said. "New Berlin West has the upper hand and we will be playing in their backyard."
Greendale played in a league mini at Deer Creek in New Berlin on Tuesday and will play in another at New Berlin Hills on Thursday.
The Panthers also placed fifth of 12 teams at the Oakwood Invite on Friday.
Stachowski triple-bogeyed the last hole to finish second overall by one stroke with a 74. Guziewicz tallied a 79.
Greendale tennis
First singles player Nick Kubczak and the first doubles team of Kyle Goodman and Matt Grieshop were among the Panthers' winners in 6-1 home victories over Wauwatosa West and Greenfield on April 20 and 22.
Franklin softball
The Sabers picked up their first win of the season by splitting a home doubleheader with Racine Case on April 20.
In a 6-4 victory, Franklin pitcher Megan Newsom scattered five hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Natalie Kay and Siera Spahiu provided a good chunk of the offense with two RBIs each; Kay also tripled and scored twice.
In the second game, the Sabers offense improved, but the defense committed 10 errors in a 13-8 defeat.
Jayme Love drove in two runs and Spahiu had three hits.
A quadrangular at Brookfield East was rained out Saturday.
Greendale softball
The Panthers' once-promising start to the 2010 season took a turn by last week's three-game losing streak.
Greendale pushed unbeaten New Berlin Eisenhower to the limits at home Friday, but fell short in an 8-5 loss.
The Panthers bounced back from a 5-0 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Eisenhower put the game away with a three-run sixth.
Greendale's Alyssa Brunelli (4-for-4) had four of her team's 10 hits.
In a 10-2 loss at South Milwaukee on April 20, the Rockets snapped a 2-2 tie with six runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Panthers, who also lost, 16-6, to Greenfield at home on April 19, began this week 4-3 both overall and in conference.
Whitnall golf
Matt Ranta tied New Berlin West's Tyler Ehlers for meet-medalist honors at the Woodland Conference West mini-meet at Brown Deer Golf Course on April 22.
Ranta and Ehlers shared the honors with their rounds of 37. Ehlers' Vikings won the mini with a 160, followed by Ranta's Falcons' runner-up total of 167.
Two days earlier at another mini, Whitnall's Michael Mathwick tied for second with a 38, one stroke behind Ehlers. The Falcons were fourth overall.
Whitnall was also eighth at the Oakwood Invitational on Friday, and 27th at the Lake Country Charity Invitational at Brown Deer on Saturday.
Franklin golf
The Sabers opened the season with consecutive losses after shooting identical 187s in a 178-187 loss to Racine Case at Ives Grove Golf Course on April 21, and in a 185-187 defeat to Muskego at Tuckaway Golf Course two days earlier.
Franklin's Nick Cervantes was the medalist against Muskego with a 44.
The Sabers rebounded to tie Oak Creek, 180-180, at Tuckaway on Monday.
Franklin also finished fourth at the Cudahy Skins and Scramble at Edgewood on Saturday and placed 11th at the Oakwood Invitational on Friday.
