Whitnall swimming

Senior-dominated Shorewood won half of the 12 events of the Woodland Conference Meet en route to 415 points at Shorewood on Friday and Saturday. Coming in an impressive, yet distant second was Whitnall with 319 points.

Whitnall's Rachel Stave won diving with 404.70 points, ahead of New Berlin West's Katie Hausmann's 326.10.

Stave was one of two Falcons winners. Kate Schubert had an impressive day with a victory in the 100-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 1.23 seconds, edging Shorewood's Ellen Stello's 1:02.00. Schubert also teamed with Sarah Arteaga, Sammy Wesel and Lauren Zurowski for second in the 200 medley relay in 1:57.99, was fifth in the 50 free (25.56) and teamed with Danika Johnson, Emma Smith and Wesel for fourth in the 400 free (3:56.61).

Arteaga swam second in the 100 backstroke in 1:13.95, second only to defending 200 individual medley state champion Clare Chamberlain of Shorewood (1:06.56), and was fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:22.96.

Also posting top-five swims for Whitnall were Smith in the 200 free (fifth, 2:07.06) and 500 free (fifth; 5:36.77), Wesel in the 100 backstroke (fourth; 1:05.46), Laura Sullivan in the 100 breaststroke (fourth; 1:15.67) and the 200 free relay of Arteaga, Zurowski, Johnson and Rebecca Wigington (fifth; 1:49.09).

Oak Creek girls volleyball

The Knights' 14-year state drought continued with a three-game loss to top-seeded Divine Savior Holy Angels at Milwaukee Riverside on Saturday, but not before Oak Creek knocked defending state runner-up Pius XI from the tournament two days earlier.

The Knights picked up a win, 25-20, 23-25, 28-26, 20-25, 15-12, over the host Popes behind Lyndsay Zabkowicz's 22 digs and 32 kills and Mariah Bukiewiez's 54 assists.

The teams fought to a 12-12 tie late in the fifth game, but two Pius errors later and a kill by Oak Creek's Alyssa Schneider finished off the Popes.

Oak Creek had five seniors, including Zabkowicz, a middle hitter who will play for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay next year and setter Veronica Chandre, who is headed for Georgia University. Chandre was sidelined with an injury the last two weeks.

Franklin girls volleyball

Third-seeded Brookfield Central ended second-seeded Franklin's season with a four-game, 25-11, 24-26, 25-23, 25-19 sectional semifinal win at West Allis Hale on Oct. 29.

Rachel Ambroch had 12 kills and three aces, Nikki Dailey made 22 assists and 15 digs and Jessica Hauke had 15 digs as well for the Sabers, who finished 27-8.
