Highlights of area high school sports

Franklin girls cross country

Senior Lindsay Fons eclipsed the field at the WIAA Division 1 Racine Horlick Sectional on Saturday and earned a berth in this weekend's state meet in Wisconsin Rapids.

Fons won the race on the 4,000-meter course by more than 15 seconds, finishing in 15 minutes, 11.3 seconds. Kenosha Bradford's Abigail Bullmore was second in 15:30.4. Fons will be joined at state by teammate Jenny Eickhorst, who qualified by finishing seventh in 15:52.2

Other runners for Franklin were Hannah Timm (22nd, 16:34.2), El Walman (29th, 16:45.4), Katelyn Salzburger (30th, 16:46.4), Emma Klein (36th in a personal-best 17:00.7), and Katelyn Thomas (43rd, 17:13.6)

Franklin finished third overall, 15 points away from qualifying for state as a team. The finish improved on last season's eighth-place standing. Muskego was first and Tremper was second.

The state meet is at Ridges Golf Course. The Division 1 race is at 12:20 p.m.

Greendale girls cross country

Hayley Serketich and Chelsey Heiden earned berths in Saturday's state meet with their performances in the Whitnall Sectional last Saturday at McCarty Park in West Allis.

Serketich finished third in 15:19.20 and Heiden was ninth in 15:36.10.

"These two girls really picked up their race intensity starting with the Muskego meet a month ago and just kept ripping it up," Greendale coach Corey Binnebose said. "They work well together and are really tough mentally. It was a tough sectional with quite a few of the top girls in the state, and they went about their business as if this was a meet in early September."

Other runners and their finishes were Lauren Clasen (36th, 17:02.80), Brenna Patterson (44th, 17:31.80), Megan Steiner (58th, 18:24.90), Colleen Jodarski (63rd, 18:35.30) and Sam Young (68th, 19:09.00).

The girls team finished seventh overall, only four points away from fifth. Waukesha West won the meet and Waukesha North's Jenna McMiller won the race in 14:55.40.

Kyle Goodman was the top finisher for the boys team, placing 22nd in 17:57.50 on the 5,000-meter course.

He was in a position to qualify for state before blacking out in the final portion of the race, Binnebose said. Goodman got back up and finished but had fallen back in the pack.

Garrett Patterson was 41st in 18:30.60, Brandon Bett finished 48th in 18:47.90, Josh Moran was 56th in 19:05.40, Tim Davis placed 57th in 19:05.90, Steve Ulatowski ran 58th in 19:07.50 and Devin Metz was 61st in 19:11.80.

The boys finished ninth overall, behind first-place Waukesha West. Waukesha South's Mike Clark was the meet's top runner, finishing first in 16:37.00.

Oak Creek swimming

The Knights swam to a 134-51 victory over Racine Park in a dual meet Oct. 21.

Rachel Medenwalt won the 200-yard freestyle (2:12.20) and 100 butterfly (1:07.97). Jackie Wnuk won the 200 individual medley (2:48.79) and the 100 breaststroke (1:22.55). Danielle Shandley won the 50 free (29.03) and 100 free (1:02.98).

The second-seeded Sabers defeated Greenfield, 25-14, 25-17, 22-25, 26-24, at home Saturday in a WIAA Division 1 regional final match.

The victory advanced Franklin to a sectional semifinal match against Brookfield Central at 8 p.m. Thursday at West Allis Hale. The victor plays Saturday at Racine Park against No. 1 Muskego or No. 4. Brookfield East.

Against Greenfield, Rachel Ambroch led Franklin with 21 kills and Nikki Dailey had 43 assists. Jessica Hauke had 15 digs. The Sabers had a bye in the first round.

Fresh off its first-ever Southeast Conference title, the second-seeded Sabers will begin postseason play at home Tuesday with a game against either No. 3 Kenosha Bradford or No. 6 South Milwaukee.

Franklin tuned up for the postseason by competing at the conference tournament Saturday at Burlington, which was won by Westosha Central. In pool play, Franklin lost to Kenosha Bradford, 25-22, 24-26, 15-10, and defeated Kenosha Tremper, 25-17, 25-15.

The Sabers then defeated Muskego, 25-19, 25-21, and lost to Racine Horlick, 25-22, 25-16.

The Sabers earned their conference title with a victory over Racine Case on Oct. 19.

Franklin improved to 7-1 in the SEC, 27-4 overall, to share the title with Racine Horlick and Westosha Central. The Sabers beat Horlick in four games earlier this season, but lost to Westosha Central in five games.

"I am very proud of the boys this year," Franklin coach Chris Dibb said. "This is a huge step forward for our program and they have really gained respect throughout the boys volleyball community."

The Sabers capped their regular season with a 55-23 rout of host Racine Horlick in a Southeast Conference game Oct. 21.

Jesse Palok scored on a pair of 1-yard scoring runs in the first quarter to help the Sabers to a 27-7 halftime lead. He added a 7-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

The Sabers (7-2 overall, 6-1 SEC) earned a No. 3 postseason seed and were to host Greendale in a Level 1 game Oct. 27.

The Sabers earned a number of top-four finishes at the Racine Case Invite on Saturday.

Melanie Pearson was fourth in diving with 264.25 points. The 200 medley relay of Emily Nienhaus, Sarah Talbot, Jessica Zeman and Courtney Owen was fourth in a season-best 2:06.54.

Zeman was fourth in the 100 butterfly in 1:10.13.

Nienhaus and Zeman both aided in another top finish when they competed with Owen and Samanth Schermeister in the fourth-place 200 freestyle relay (1:49.88).

Franklin ended the dual-meet portion of its season with a 106-80 victory over Racine Horlick at home Oct. 21 on parents' night.

First-place finishers were Owen (50 and 100 free; 30.15 and 1:08.00), Schermeister (200 free, 2:31.89) and Nienhaus (100 back, 1:18.67).

The 200 medley of Nienhaus, Talbot, Zeman, and Owen won in 2:20.88, 6 seconds ahead of the second-place team.

Next up for the Sabers is the Southeast Conference Meet on Saturday at Racine Case.

Greendale football

The Panthers finished their regular season with a 30-7 win at Cudahy on Oct. 21 in a Woodland Conference game.

The game was tied, 7-7, after the first quarter before Greendale pulled away on 6- and 26-yard scoring passes from Ernie Valente to Andrew Brees. Valente added a 7-yard TD run to make it 27-7 at the half.

Greendale improved to 7-2 overall and 6-2 in the conference. Cudahy fell to 1-8, 1-7.

The Panthers were to play at No. 3 Franklin (7-2, 6-1 Southeast Conference) in a WIAA Division 2 postseason game on Tuesday.

Ninth-seeded GHS won a regional semifinal game before running into powerhouse Muskego in the second round and losing, 25-15, 25-18, 25-18, to end its season.

Muskego, the top-seeded team in the sectional, improved to 40-5 and advanced to take on Brookfield East in a sectional semifinal game.

The Panthers began the postseason with a 25-20, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, victory at home over No. 8 Racine Horlick on Oct. 22.

Oak Creek football

The Oak Creek Knights are back. With a 27-7 win over Racine Park at Horlick Athletic Field on Oct. 21, the Knights qualified for the WIAA playoffs for the first time since 2005.

Oak Creek was seeded fourth and was to begin postseason play Tuesday at home against Milwaukee Hamilton (6-3 overall, 6-2 City Conference).

The Knights improved to 6-3 overall and 4-3 in the Southeast Conference with the win over Park. They won their final two games to qualify, including a 14-7 home win over Muskego on Friday.

"We had to beat two pretty good football teams," third-year Oak Creek coach Mike Bartholomew said. "We had to play good teams all the way through to get in. It's a big deal to get in. The kids will realize it come Tuesday. It's great for the school and the community because there had been a drought."

Senior running back Darrol Inniss gave the Knights a 6-0 lead with a 20-yard touchdown on Oak Creek's first possession, and he sealed the deal with an interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

"They really came together and did what we needed them to do," Bartholomew said. "I'm really excited for them, and now we have a couple of days to see where we can get better."

The Knights turned in a determined effort before falling to Marquette, 3-2, in a sectional semifinal game Oct. 22 at Quad Park that ended their season.

The Hilltoppers, a No. 1 seed, scored the winning goal in the 58th minute to down fourth-seeded Oak Creek.

The Knights advanced to the semifinal game with a 3-0 win over Franklin at home Oct. 15 and a 9-0 rout of Milwaukee Ronald Reagan on Oct. 13.

Evan Brunn, Robert Alonzo and Roberto Valdivia scored for Oak Creek in the victory over Franklin.

Oak Creek girls volleyball

The third-seeded Knights will take on host and second-seeded Pius XI at 8 tonight in a sectional semifinal game.

Oak Creek advanced to face the Lady Popes with a 25-7, 25-10, 25-12 victory over visiting Milwaukee King on Saturday and a 25-6, 25-4, 25-5, triumph over visiting Milwaukee Marshall/Custer on Oct. 22.

Seth LaBodda finished 18th in 17:48.20 to post the top boys finish for the Knights at Saturday's Whitnall Sectional. No Knights qualified for Saturday's state meet, which as at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

Other runners and their finishes for Oak Creek were: Tony Rodriguez (26th, 18:00.80), Ryan Clementz (45th, 18:36.80), Devin Kuick, (47th, 18:45.90), Cody Walters (62nd, 19:13:30), Jake Schmidt (72nd, 20:06.80) and Kamaljit Saini (75th, 20:28.30).

Oak Creek finished eighth overall as Waukesha West took first. Waukesha South's Mike Clark won in 16:37.

Taylor Clementz finished 50th in 17:52.20 to post the top time for the girls team. She was followed by Noelle Posda (52nd, 17:56.10), Aylissa Bober (55th, 18:15.70), Megan Buse (61st, 18:31.50), Hannah Saunders (69th, 19:11.80) and Melanie Smrstick (73rd, 19:22.90).

The Knights finished 11th as Waukesha West won the sectional. The top girls runner was Jenna McMiller, who ran 14:55.40.
