Greendale tennis
The Panthers' dominance of the Woodland Conference continued with a clean sweep of the league tournament Sept. 29 and 30.
Greendale won all 21 of its matches and lost just one of 43 sets at the tournament. The Panthers finished 63-0 in league matches after sweeping through the conference dual season as well.
Greendale champions were Lauren Piotrowski, Emily Perinovic, Meghan McCormick and Ruth Jensen at first through fourth singles, and the doubles teams of Gabby Weber and Alyssa Brunelli, Elisabeth Loomis and Molly McCormick and Mary Merg and Casey Hackett.
The tournament was the final tune-up before the WIAA postseason, which continues with sectional matches at Greendale's Village Club and Community Center at 9 a.m. Thursday.
Franklin tennis
The Sabers tied a school record by placing third in the Southeast Conference Tournament on Oct. 1 and Saturday.
Franklin was third at four flights, including all three doubles tandems. The teams of Elizabeth Brandes and Liv Lampone, Kat Donovan and Kayla Plath and Shannon Murawski and Sanjana Segu all went 2-1 with victories in their third-place matches. Murawski and Segu needed three sets to beat a Kenosha Bradford pair for third at third doubles.
Fourth singles player Nicole Thompson was also third, and Amy Hennen and Yuka Shiotani were fourth at second and third singles.
Franklin, which also finished third in 2007, enjoyed a good first day by pushing six of seven entrants through.
Oak Creek swimming
Rachel Medenwaldt and Danielle Shandley led the Knights to a fourth-place finish at the eight-team South Side Sprints at West Allis Central on Saturday.
Medenwaldt was the runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 7.51 seconds as well as in the 50 butterfly in 30.19. Shandley took second in the 100 free in 59.52 and third in the 50 free in 27.41. The duo then teamed with Sydney Krimmer and Emily Malinowski for third in the 100 free relay.
At the Cudahy Packer Relays on Monday, Krimmer, Kaitlin McIntosh, Shandley and Medenwaldt picked up a win in the 200 free relay in 1:52.64, the Knights' only win.
Oak Creek was runner-up in five events en route to its fourth-place finish.
Whitnall tennis
The Falcons were edged in a battle for second place by New Berlin Eisenhower at the Woodland Conference Tournament Sept. 29 and 30.
Whitnall made it to the finals twice and lost two third-place matches en route to 28 points. Greendale dominated with 56 and Eisenhower was runner-up with 32.
The Falcons' Lauryn Jashinski was seeded second at third singles and made it to the finals, where she lost to Greendale's Meghan McCormick, 6-2, 6-3. Whitnall's second doubles team of Kristin Kowalewski and Lindsay Kartye also lost in the finals.
Whitnall's Allison Barnhardt survived a difficult first-round, three-set match with St. Thomas More's Annie Voltner and eventually placed fourth at first singles, as did the Falcons' third doubles team of Allie Anderson and Samantha Zacher.
Oak Creek girls volleyball
The Knights geared up for their Southeast Conference showdown with Muskego by picking up a convincing league win over visiting Racine Horlick on Sept. 29.
The Knights host Muskego, the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association's top-ranked team, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Oak Creek improved to 23-11 overall and 3-1 in the SEC with their 25-17, 25-16, 25-21 win over Horlick.
Veronica Chandre posted a match-high 16 digs and 22 assists and Lyndsay Zabkowicz had 11 kills and three blocks.
Franklin swimming
Jessica Zeman's pair of individual victories helped the Sabers edge past South Milwaukee for the title in the eight-team South Side Sprints at West Allis Central on Friday and Saturday.
Zeman won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.78 seconds and the 25 free in 13.11, just ahead of teammate Megan Newsom. Zeman also teamed with Courtney Owen, Newsom and Emily Nienhaus in a win in the 100 free relay in 50.23.
The Sabers 200 medley relay of Newsom, Sarah Talbot, Nienhaus and Zeman took second in 2:07.12, as did Nienhaus in the 50 backstroke in (32.53).
Jenna Renner was third in diving, Melanie Pearson fourth, Nikki Turkowski fifth and Cassidy Burger sixth as the Sabers took a 58-20 lead over Milwaukee Lutheran on the first day of the meet. Franklin eventually won with 500 points; South Milwaukee was second with 426.
Franklin golf
The Sabers' one-two punch of sophomore Taylor Chase and junior Taylor Wenzel began their postseason push at the Kenosha Bradford WIAA Regional at Maplecrest Country Club on Sept. 30.
Chase was the meet medalist with a 90 and Wenzel was close behind with a 94. They were two of only three golfers to crack 100 and advanced to the Racine Case Sectional at Ives Grove Golf Course on Tuesday, after deadlines.
Franklin placed fifth with a 413; the top four teams advanced to the sectional as did the top four individuals on non-qualifying teams.
To advance to the state tournament, to be held Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge in Madison, either Chase or Wenzel or both would had to have placed among the top three individuals not on state-qualifying teams at the sectional.
Franklin girls volleyball
The Sabers extended their league winning streak to four straight matches with a pair of sweeps.
Franklin improved to 19-3 overall and 4-1 in the Southeast Conference with a 28-26, 25-19, 29-27 victory over visiting Kenosha Tremper on Sept. 29.
Nikki Dailey had a match-high 33 assists and five aces and chipped in with a team-high three blocks. Rachel Ambroch tallied 16 kills for the winners.
In a 25-11, 25-14, 25-18 win at South Milwaukee one night earlier, Ambroch had a match-best 14 kills and Dailey led with 21 assists and eight aces.
Greendale soccer
Ross Fieldbinder's shot in the first minute of the second overtime snapped a 1-1 tie and gave the Panthers an upset win over visiting New Berlin West on Sept. 30.
Greendale's Mitchell Placek knocked in a penalty kick with 11 minutes remaining in regulation to tie the score before Fieldbinder's late heroics. The win improved the Panthers' record to 9-10-2 overall, 4-5 in the Woodland Conference.
The victory came two days after Placek scored a pair of goals in a 4-2 loss at Pewaukee.
Greendale cross country
Two Greendale underclassmen - Hayley Serketich and Chelsey Heiden - placed in the top 10 at the Mukwonago Invite on Oct. 1.
The Panthers finished seventh as a team, but Serketich (15:35) and Heiden (15:55) finished fourth and seventh individually.
The Greendale boys placed eighth of nine teams. Kyle Goodman was eighth in 17:19.
Whitnall swimming
The Falcons moved to 3-0 in league duals with their most impressive win of the season, a 121-49 victory over visiting Greendale on Sept. 30.
Whitnall won nine of 12 events, including victories in all three relays. Kate Schubert, Emma Smith, Laura Sullivan and Danika Johnson won the 200 medley; Gina Villiani, Samantha Wesel, Smith and Lauren Zurowski were first in the 200 free; and Schubert, Sarah Arteaga, Wesel and Zurowski took the 400 free.
Arteaga in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke, Schubert in the 50 free and 100 butterfly, Smith in the 100 breaststroke and Wesel in the 100 free were also victorious.
Whitnall cross country
With all five runners among the top 13, the Whitnall boys dominated the nine-team Mukwonago Invite on Oct. 1.
The Falcons' Jake Lehmann (third; 16 minutes, 59 seconds), Rob Emmett (ninth; 17:20) and Mitch Olson (10th; 17:20) posted top-10 times. Eric Windt (11th; 17:25) and Jack Kasprzak (13th; 17:36) were close behind.
Thanks to Dana Steffen's third-place run of 15:21, the Whitnall girls were sixth. Only Mukwonago's Blair Doney (14:47) and Oconomowoc's Mandy Prom (15:13) finished better than the Whitnall junior.
Mary Erickson, who took 11th in 16:16, also ran well for the Falcons.
Whitnall soccer
Whitnall goal keeper Jacob Bye posted consecutive shutouts, but he and the Falcons had only one win to show for it.
Bye made six saves and Nikolai Miskov scored twice as the Falcons defeated visiting Cudahy/St. Francis, 3-0, on Sept. 30.
Will Pelkofer had two assists and Paul Craig added late goal as Whitnall improved to 7-7-3 overall and 5-3-1 in the Woodland Conference.
The win came just two days after the Falcons battled the host Shorewood Greyhounds to a scoreless tie. Bye again made six saves.
