Hales Corners will try to spruce up vacant lots

Committee given task of leading effort

April 8, 2014

Hales Corners — The village has asked a committee to take charge of an effort to beautify up to 27 vacant lots this spring.

About seven lots are in flood plains. Others look sparse from the removal of ash trees plagued by emerald ash borer, the invasive insect from Asia that has killed up to 30 million trees to date.

Up to 150 trees are expected to be replaced over five years in the village, members of the village's Environmental Committee indicated.

The committee also hopes to gauge resident interest in applying for the Fruity Nutty Five contest through Victory Garden Initiative next year. As part of the contest, Milwaukee neighborhoods compete to win a Fruitty Nutty orchard — up to 30 fruit and nonproducing trees, shrubs and vines, according to the website.

To be eligible, 10 neighbors of the desired lot entered to win a Fruitty Nutty orchard must volunteer to help take care of those trees.

The committee decided to mention the contest in an upcoming newsletter to inform residents of the community food project. It expects to hold an informational meeting at a later date.
