Hales Corners Park outdoor pavilion inches toward location approval

March 27, 2014

Hales Corners — The village's proposed outdoor pavilion project is still $60,000 short of the amount needed to ensure its construction by July 4, its project leader said after a meeting with the Milwaukee County Parks Department.

The pavilion was proposed by Friends of Hales Corners Park and Pool last year and is estimated to cost $225,000. It is planned to be a 22-foot by 42-foot structure with lighting and two additional restrooms. The Friends group fundraises year-round to finance the project with private donations and national grants.

The pavilion ideally would be built north of the Hales Corners Park parking lot, near the playground equipment, according to Don Schwartz, president of Friends of Hales Corners Park. Due to water problems, Milwaukee County has not yet approved its official location.

Hales Corners Park, 5674 S. New Berlin Road, is owned by Milwaukee County and has public and private partnerships with the Friends and businesses who contribute money.

When built, the pavilion will join other Hales Corners Park amenities including the Veterans Memorial, Jake's Rock, basketball courts, picnic areas, softball fields and two pools located on New Berlin Road, just west of 116th Street.

The new pavilion will house picnic tables, a concessions area, storage and restrooms. It also will serve as a shelter for ice skaters in winter.

"One of the big attractions of the pavilion is it's going to have two more restrooms. That's been a big complaint in Hales Corners Park," said Schwartz.

The Alyson Dudek International Ice Center also will move closer to the pavilion, shifting from its current temporary, location in Hales Corners Park near the basketball courts and war memorial, Schwartz said. The temporary ice rink opened in December. The Friends group plans to enlarge the ice center to standard Olympic size for speed skating, which is 100-feet by 200-feet. These dimensions are similar to the standard hockey rink size.

Schwartz said he wants to get the new pavilion built before considering its potential to generate revenue through skate rentals. Right now the ice rink is free and open to the public for those with their own skates.

A public information meeting will be held Monday, April 14, 2014 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Village Hall, 5635 S. New Berlin Rd, to gauge citizen interest in the outdoor pavilion and the moving of the Alyson Dudek Ice Center. Milwaukee County Parks and the Friends of Hales Corners Park and Pool will sponsor the meeting.
