June 08, 2010 5:04 p.m. | Hales Corners - Citing "staff shortages and budget constraints," the village on Tuesday started closing the main office early two days per week.
Until probably Labor Day, the office will close at 1:30 Tuesdays and Thursdays - 3 1/2 hours early on both days, Village Administrator Michael Weber said.
The village's main office is down to three employees from five, as one position has been left unfilled and one employee is on medical leave, Weber said.
The village will save money by not hiring temporary help to cover the office for those seven hours per week, he said.
Weber said the move was prompted by a reduction in revenue, primarily from diminished earnings on interest. He said the village's 2010 budget anticipated a stronger economic recovery and that interest rates have continued to slide.

June 03, 2010 4:34 p.m. | The state Department of Transportation has dropped plans for a roundabout near the intersection of Janesville Road and Highway 100.
The DOT had proposed it as part of its plans to reconstruct the road beginning in 2014. Instead, the state will make improvements to the existing intersection, Hales Corners Administrator Mike Weber said.
The state has also agreed to install stoplights at Abbott Avenue.
Hales Corners personnel are still meeting with DOT officials to discuss some "refinements" to their plan, Weber said. Local officials have previously objected to several components of the plan, including the relocation of seven businesses near Forest Home Avenue and Janesville Road.
