The basics: Your guide to getting around

It doesn't matter whether you just moved into Hales Corners or whether you're a lifetime resident, here's your guide to just about everything you need to know about living in the city.

How do I change the address on my driver's license?

You can do this over the phone, through the mail or in person at the nearest state Department of Motor Vehicle location. The nearest DMV office is located at 5500 W. Grange Ave. in Greendale. If you'd rather do it via the mail or phone, you can get the details at the DMV's Web site.

How do I change my address with the Postal Service?

You can do this in person at the Hales Corners Post Office, 5444 S 108th St., or you can do it online at the Postal Service's Web site.

How do I register children for school?

To begin the enrollment process for children in the Whitnall School District, the student's parent/guardian should go to the nearest school or call the district office at (414) 525-8400.

When is the trash picked up?

The Village contracts with Veolia Environmental Services for residential garbage collection. Waste is collected every Tuesday west of Hwy. 100 and every Thursday east of Hwy. 100. If your garbage was not collected, you must call Veolia Environmental Services at (262) 679-0860. For more information on recycling rules and schedules, or general yard waste rules, call the Department of Public Works at (414) 529-6165.

What are the city's parking rules?

Village ordinance prohibits parking on all Village streets for more than 30 minutes between the hours of 2:30 a.m. and 6 a.m. Violators are subject to fines ranging from $10 to $50 plus costs. In cases where an illegally parked vehicle poses an immediate hazard to public safety, the vehicle may be towed. For more information, call (414) 529-6140.

Where is Village Hall? What are the hours?

Village Hall is located at 5635 S. New Berlin Road in Hales Corners. It's open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. New Berlin Road can be accessed from 121st and Grange Avenue or from 116th Street one block north of Janesville Road.

Who are my local elected officials? How can I reach them?

Hales Corners' village president is Jim Ryan. The Village Board consists of six elected trustees. Click here for phone numbers for elected officials.

Where is the local library? What are the library hours?

The Hales Corners Public Library is located at 5885 S. 116th St. in Hales Corners. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Memorial Day to Labor Day hours are: Monday 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday closed. How do I register to vote? Where do I vote?

You can register at the Village Clerk's office at Village Hall, 5635 S. New Berlin Road in Hales Corners. The Village is divided into nine wards. All voting takes place in the lower level of the Village Hall. Polls are open on Election Day from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

In addition, you may register at the polling place on the day of the election, provided you have proper identification. Electors wishing to vote by absentee ballot must apply for absentee ballots at Village Hall during regular business hours. Call (414) 529-6161 for details on how to register. Where can I learn more about merchants and shopping in Hales Corners?
