QUOTES OF THE WEEK

The people of Wisconsin can be trusted to decide if that’s who they want as governor. Let them decide and no one else.
GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Neumann, announcing he won't seek the Republican Party of Wisconsin’s endorsement at next week’s convention.

For somebody who spent the beginning of this year going to Lincoln Day dinners and Republican functions and even called the delegates, I think what happened was he was seeking to have that kind of support and then realized the grassroots activists, the conservatives across the state, had already picked a candidate for governor.
Scott Walker, Neumann’s GOP primary opponent. Walker is expected to win the endorsement vote.

I don't think it undermines anything. It's a very workable and amicable compromise.
Wisconsin Tavern League director Pete Madland, reacting to a bill signed by Governor Doyle that includes the "substantial wall" provision permitting some open-air smoking rooms once the statewide smoking ban goes into effect in July.

If bar owners start to play cute, the public isn't going to be happy about that.”
Maureen Busalacchi, executive director of SmokeFree Wisconsin, saying she expects the state smoking ban to be effective.

“They expected us to welcome the change. Come November we’re going to show them just how grateful we are.”
Sarah Palin

"Limbaugh can play with himself."
When President Obama was asked if he would play a round of golf with his talk-radio nemesis Rush Limbaugh, this was his response, relayed by a top Democrat, according to Zev Chafets in his new book, "Rush Limbaugh: An Army of One," due May 25 from Sentinel.

"He's the president of the United States. If any president asked me to meet him, or play golf with him, I'd do it. But I promise you that will never happen. His base on the left would have a s--t-fit."
Rush Limbaugh speaking to Chafets.
