Goodnight everyone, and have a (not too) spicy weekend!

Goodnight everyone!

It's Friday night. Time to unwind with our regular Friday night feature on This Just In.

The weekend has finally arrived.

The sun has set.

The evening sky has erupted.

Let's smooth our way into Saturday and Sunday.

Monday is May 5, Cinco de Mayo, the day that commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). It has become a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, a day to hoot, holler, eat salsa and drink margaritas.

Tonight, some nice Latin music fitting our mellow theme to get you into the mood.

Notice anything about them, besides their traditional Mexican garb?

They’re all men.

Not so with this group.

Founded in 1999 by trumpet player Cindy Shea, the Mariachi Divas are a unique multicultural all-female ensemble. They perform regularly at the Disneyland resort in Anaheim. In February they won a Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican Album, “
A Mi Manera.” Here’s one of the lovely tracks.

Next, another 2014 Grammy winner for Best Tropical Latin Album, The Pacific Mambo Orchestra. The big band provides wonderfully soft music for singer Alexa Weber Morales on “Bolero Cocomo.”

Our next performer…

Linda Ronstadt was one of the hottest pop/rock stars of the 1970’s. But when her career began to fade just a bit she reinvented herself with “What’s New” in 1983, the first in a trilogy of very successful standards albums recorded with bandleader/arranger Nelson Riddle. Gone were the sexy outfits. Ronstadt would come onstage with long gowns and white gloves.

Later Ronstadt would explore mariachi music. Here she performs a classic that goes all the way back to 1939.

A few weeks ago Ronstadt was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but was unable to attend.

Now 75, Ronstadt is battling Parkinson’s disease and is retired.

If you’ve noticed another theme here, a pattern of female dominance, it was unintentional. It just worked out that way. So let’s continue.

One of the greatest singers of all-time had a series of Spanish albums beginning in the late 50’s. His daughter would emulate his career, also recording a Spanish album that featured this beautiful duet.

Come closer to me
So I can see
Heaven in your eyes

Come closer to me
So I can be
Close to paradise

Thrill me with your kisses
Let me learn what bliss is
Kiss me once and then
We'll kiss and kiss again
And life will be divine

Come closer, my dear
So I can hear
Music in my heart

I've waited so long
To hear the song that
Your love will start

Darling, I'll adore you
Live my life just for you
All I ask is this
Please give me one more kiss
And whisper you'll be mine

Acercate mas y mas y mas
Pero mucho mas
Y besame asi, asi, asi
Como besas tu

Pero besa pronto
Porque estou sufriendo

Kiss me once and then
We'll kiss and kiss again
And life will be divine

Come closer, my dear
So I can hear
Music in my heart

I've waited so long
To hear the song that
Your love will start

Darling, I'll adore you
Live my life just for you
All I ask is this
Please give me one more kiss
And whisper you'll be mine

You’ve probably never heard of our next female vocalist, but you’ve likely heard her. She enrolled in a guitar academy at the tender age of 13. By 19 she had been discovered and launched her professional career, associating herself with some of the big emerging names in bossa nova.By the end of 1964 she joined Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’65.

The Wall Street Journal described Wanda Sa (also known as Wanda de Sah) as "legendary" and National Public Radio called her "one of Brazil's best-kept musical secrets." She's still actively singing today.

That’s it for this week. We do this every Friday to show that there’s plenty of good music around.

Goodnight.

Sleep well.

Have a great weekend.

Our rousing close was a 2014 Grammy nominee, losing out to the Pacific Mambo Orchestra. American pianist and record producer Sergio George put together various salsa performers for a CD and DVD and has taken them out on the road.  Enjoy Sergio George Presents Salsa Giants.
