Dad, husband, baseball coach, writer, community activist and crappy guitar player...I tend to stand a little to the left on most issues. I don't get my news from Fox "News" - and neither should you.
Bring an apple for teacher...and a round of bullets while you're at it.
A proposal in the State Assembly to allow off-duty, retired and out-of-state police officers to carry concealed weapons inside and around our public schools was NOT brought up for a vote (thank God)! Mostly because Rep. Joel Kleefisch (married to Tammy Fay Baker) added a proposal to the bill allowing for ANYONE who already has a concealed weapons permit to carry on school grounds.
Assembly speaker Robin Voss thought he would not get the votes...what a bright guy that Voss - Either that or he might have kids in public schools and doesn't want just any permit carrier waltzing around his kids' school with a loaded gun under his t-shirt, pretending to be John Wayne.
I have two kids in school right now and the last thing I want is ANY guns in their school, with the exception of the assigned school resource officer - who is trained for such a position and knows all the kids (and most parents) by face and name. If you allow retired cops and out-of-state officers to carry loaded guns into a school, what good does that do? They don't know what adults belong in the building. They wouldn't recognize a seventh grade science teacher from a sexual predator from some student's father.
More guns in schools (or any) is NOT the answer - even by off duty cops. I have known many police officers and some I trust with my life, others I wouldn't trust to dog sit for me. And as for allowing ALL concealed carry permit holders to walk around the playground with a loaded gun rubbing against his thigh as he looks for trouble, well that is just bat crap crazy.
More people with more guns don't make schools or public places safer - just look at the recent shootings in military buildings. Bringing more guns into schools to combat gun violence is like bringing more vicious dogs into a school after one vicious dog got loose and attacked some students.
Do we want various dog owners patrolling our schools with flesh hungry pit bulls "just in case?" What if that dog gets loose? What if your gun ends up in the wrong hands? What if that dog attacks the wrong person? What if the gun holder shoots the wrong person? What if that dog is scared by your kid and bites him? What if that John Wayne wannbe concealed permit holder thinks your kid looks like a threat and shoots him?
Why don't teachers all come to class with guard dogs? Why don't they all carry concealed weapons? Accidents rarely happen, right? Kids always want to pet a dog...
Call Kleefisch and tell him to take his John Wayne B.S. somewhere else. And while you're at, call Senator Mary Lazich, who supports this crazy bill - And tell her that if she really is pro-life then she would not support guns in schools. Guns don't kill people. People carrying guns kill people with said guns.
