Just when it was thought we've seen how negative Eric Hovde was willing to go, he hits a new low.

Sure, he's outspent our campaign nearly 5 to 1 on television making his case, but his missteps and half-truths have raised far-too-many-questions.

So if you're Eric Hovde what do you do when your message isn't working?  He takes what he's learned having spent the last 24 years in Washington D.C. watching professional distorters and spreads lies about Tommy Thompson in a brand of negative campaigning that has earned him the scorn of fellow conservatives.

Hovde's latest ad makes two claims that just aren't true - the fact of the matter is; Tommy opposes the health care mandate and has always opposed Obamacare and has supported its repeal.

Here are the facts:

Tommy's opposition to mandates is so strong that he testified against them in Congress in May 2008. Any attempts to mischaracterize his opposition to mandates is a flat out distortion. Tommy Thompson's testimony BEFORE THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON FINANCE, May 6, 2008:

"Today, it is estimated that 47 million Americans are uninsured. This number is unacceptable and must be addressed. However, I am not convinced that the individual mandate is the correct approach. We have seen in Massachusetts that the individual mandate approach is not effective at covering the most vulnerable part of the population, that part of the population which needs coverage the most.

"I am a strong believer in creating opportunities for access and creating a marketplace for competition."

Here's what the well-respected FactCheck.org had to say on August 31, 2011:

Now the latest claim from Hovde crosses the line from laughable to flat out lying.

Hovde states, "Tommy won't fight to repeal Obamacare." Tommy has always opposed Obamacare, and he's made being the 51st vote to repeal it a priority once elected. Hovde's use of a partial quote in which Thompson is pragmatically arguing that President Obama won't sign the repeal is a blatant misrepresentation of Thompson's position. Hovde has already been admonished by conservative talk radio hosts for misrepresenting Thompson's position, yet he continues to run the ad.

Thompson's position is clear on the repeal of Obamacare, as stated on June 28, 2012:

"My first vote as a US Senator will be for the full repeal of Obamacare. I will  use every measure available to block any vote in the next term of the Senate until a full Obamacare repeal vote is taken. But that is not enough. I also have the ideas and experience to actually bring down health costs and increase availability, which is something nobody else in the race offers. That vote will only succeed if Wisconsin elects a Republican Senator.

"Furthermore, I would work with Governor Walker to make sure Obamacare is derailed in Wisconsin. We deserve better than a cost-increasing, choice-limiting political fix for a broken health care system."

Please take a moment to forward this e-mail to those that share our concern with the direction of our country and defeating Madison-liberal Tammy Baldwin in November. With ten days to go before the Republican primary, Tommy Thompson remains the candidate best-positioned to beat Baldwin, and is senate-ready day one.

Please don't forget that our best chance to be the 51st vote in the U.S. Senate to repeal Obamacare, balance the budget, cap and cut spending, and cap revenues  is Tommy Thompson, and he needs your vote on August 14th.

Sincerely,
TGT - Ryan Signature

I'd like to invite you to watch our latest video. Of all the individuals across Wisconsin who want Tommy to be their Senator, here are a few that expressed their feelings why:
