Friday night on InterCHANGE

Here are the topics we discuss Friday night at 6:30 on Milwaukee Public Television Channel 10:

1– ELECTION RESULTS.

So now it’s Barrett versus Walker.  Why was Walker able to trounce Neumann?  Why did Neumann do so well in much of the rest of the state?  Did Milwaukee talk radio have an impact on this election?  Will it have an impact on the general election?  Who will win the general election and why?  What will the first polls show?  Who will win southeastern Wisconsin, Mayor Barrett or the County Executive Walker?  Will this race be won outstate or in the Milwaukee Metropolitan area?  Will Obama and Biden making appearances here help or hurt Barrett?  Will Walker be able to raise the kind of money that Barrett will be able to?  Will this be a race where the candidate for Lt. Governor matters?  Do you expect some dirty advertising during the next six weeks?

2 – Pedro Colon.

State Representative Pedro Colon is appointed to a vacancy on the Milwaukee County Circuit Court bench.  18 people applied for the job, 8 were called in for interviews, and a list of finalists was given to Governor Doyle.  He selected Pedro Colon, who will have to face an election for the job next year.  Was this simply payback for political favors?  Does anyone consider Colon a competent legal scholar?  Is it ridiculous to criticize this appointment for being political, when the job itself is political anyway?  Colon goes from a salary of about $50,000 to a salary of about $130,000. Will he be expected to help deliver the south-side Latino vote for Barrett?

3 – United States Poverty.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau the poverty rate climbed last year to the point where one in seven Americans (44 million people) are now living in poverty.  The unemployment rate rose more from 2008-to-2009 than in any year since the Bureau began tracking it in 1947.  The number of uninsured also climbed.   For a single adult in 2009, the poverty line was $10,830 in pretax cash income; for a family of four, $22,050.  Are these income numbers ridiculous?  Is it fair to say that a family of four making more than $22,050 isn’t “poor?”  Is this the new reality in America as the employment situation continues to remain unstable – there will be fewer “haves” and more “have nots.”  Or, is this simply a result of the lingering recession.  Will it get worse before it gets better?
