When you first meet Mr. Max Gimble, he will excitedly greet you and give you kisses.
The 1-year-old Catahoula Leopard Dog mix at the Wisconsin Humane Society is looking for a loving guardian who celebrates life to the fullest. He likes to lean into your legs to solicit a good tummy scratch, too. You’ll surely notice his gorgeous blue/tan merle coat and handsome grin. His unusual coat of many colors attracts attention, especially because he is so striking and fit!
It won’t take long to realize that Max exudes happiness. The smiley guy loves life and wants a guardian who feels the same way. Max is quite intelligent and thrives on being taught new jobs and tricks. He also loves to play in the snow, and is thrilled to play with other confident dogs who like to wrestle, play tag and hide-and-go-seek.
Max enjoys toys and will self-entertain with a Kong stuffed with peanut butter or other mentally challenging toys. After a long walk and a few training exercises, though, Mr. Max Gimble will want to curl up by your feet and snooze off contentedly.
Does he sound like a good match for you? Check him out at http://www.wihumane.org/ or call 414-ANIMALS for adoption information.
Jake is a treasured dog among the staff and volunteer dog walkers at the Wisconsin Humane Society. He always greets you with a huge smile, like you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to him. A bad day at work or school is quickly cured by his cheerful demeanor and eagerness to entertain you. Jake LOVES to go for walks and play in the snow, regardless of the temperature. He is an active, silly boy who thinks independently yet cherishes the companionship of humans.
Jake is a 2 ½ year old Labrador Retriever/Newfoundland mix. He’s been called a “goofy newfie” on more than one occasion. He enjoys the pursuit of tennis balls and proudly demonstrates his ability to catch balls mid-air. This seventy pound dog is also very affectionate and loving; after a good bout of exercise, Jake adores getting tummy rubs and ear scratches. Jake will undoubtedly bring great joy into someone’s life.
Does he sound like a good match for you? Check him out at www.wihumane.org or call 414-ANIMALS for adoption information.
Jake, like many dogs, barrels through snow piles with glee and is entranced by snow falling from the sky. However, all dog guardians should be aware that cold weather can be very dangerous for dogs. From frostbite and cracked paws to antifreeze and sidewalk salt, winter can pose many threats to your dog’s safety. Check out cold weather safety tips at the WHS web site.

From an Abyssinian Guinea Pig named Mango to Sparkles, a Rex Rabbit, the Wisconsin Humane Society has a myriad of small animals right now! All these petite pals are looking for new homes and make great companions.
You don't have to take them outside in the middle of the night, they never howl at the moon and they are natural entertainers. Many apartments and condos that restrict dogs and cats allow for little guys like Mango and Sparkles, too. Check out all the small animals at WHS.

Update! Riggins was adopted by a great family.
Riggins is a 7-year-old Cocker Spaniel who came to WHS as a stray. He's such a sweet boy and loves to be brushed and petted. Riggins is playful, but doesn't bounce off the walls like his younger friends. Polite, gentle and quiet, Riggins would be a great first dog for just about any family. If you have kids, though, make sure to bring them to WHS to meet any future addition to the family before bringing him home. If you are interested in Riggins, stop by this weekend! It may be cold, but Riggins will warm your heart.

UPDATE: Eliza is now in a new home!
Eliza loves cat naps, as you can see. Even more, she likes to be brushed, petted and generally doted upon. Eliza is a 9-year-old Cream Point Siamese mix with a calm demeanor and affectionate personality. Her thick coat is strikingly soft and her blue eyes are definitely eye-catching.
Although Eliza is a senior cat, she has many years ahead of her. Older cats make great companions because they've grown out of the kitten crazies and already know the ropes. Their personalities are much more established, too!
If you are interested in adopting Eliza, or any of the other great cats, check out wihumane.org now!

UPDATE! Dakota was adopted Wednesday evening by a terrific woman from Grafton!

Dakota is a 7-year-old Akita who couldn't be sweeter! This gentle giant knows several commands, including "sit" and "shake." He is a calm, patient dog who likes to spend time hanging out in the snow or cuddling with a pal. At nearly 100 lbs, he would do best in a home without little kids he might accidentally knock over, but he'd likely enjoy the friendship of older children. If your family is interested in giving this great guy a home, bring everyone down to meet Dakota at WHS. If you have another dog, you can even do a dog intro here! Click here to learn more.

UPDATE: DEWEY FOUND HIS FOREVER HOME!
Dewey is a 6 month old Labrador Retriever mix with a shiny coat. He has unique patches of white around his nose and also on all four paws! His gorgeous brown eyes are hard to resist, but what really makes this pooch so distinctive is his contagious smile. Dewey lights up when you enter his suite and he adores all the attention he can get. He’s an energetic boy who loves to play fetch as much as he enjoys learning.
Dewey would likely excel with an active guardian who would enjoy walking, playing and training him. A stash of tennis balls and nylabones wouldn’t hurt, either! Dewey is still a puppy and makes good use of his toys at WHS. Dewey does like to take center stage, so he’d prefer a home without very young children. To learn more about Dewey, or any of the animals for adoption, click here.

UPDATE! Jake was adopted on Saturday by a great young couple who report that he's already sharing the couch with the cat. Congrats, Jake!
Jake was the subject of an earlier post, which you can still read by clicking on this link, but we wanted to share a little update on this special dog. One of our volunteers spent a lot of time outside with him in the recent snows and sent a quick note: "He was so cute as he took all the fuzzy cloth toys that I tossed him and buried them in the snow... He also was burying himself in the snow and then he did the Indy 500 all around the play area about 5 to 6 times! Inside, he was an absolute angel and laid in my lap for belly rubs and lots of TLC and petting..."
Jake is still patiently waiting for a very special valentine who loves to go walking, delights in playing outside and enjoys being a consistent, nurturing teacher. Will he find a way into your heart? Check him out at www.wihumane.org.

UPDATE! Sleeping peacefully with her bunny friend, Tiger is now in her new loving home!
Tiger, an 8-month-old kitten, had been living with an abusive family prior to her arrival at WHS. She was thrown, chased with a broom, dragged around the house by her tail, punched and kicked.
WHS staff members were not sure that she would improve behaviorally when she first arrived. Tiger was scared to death of humans, cowering into a corner and striking out when anyone tried to pet her. After a few days in a safe, quiet place with regular visitors treating her with gentle hands, she is doing soooo much better. Tiger was recently spayed and is now available for adoption. She is a playful, stunning kitten and will do best in a quieter home with very polite children, or no kids at all. She also prefers a home with no other cats.
Whenever an animal is abused, a chain reaction begins in our community. Not only does an innocent animal get injured, but the person who commits the offense often falls into a cycle that could ultimately result in violence against other people. Countless violent offenders such as those responsible for the Columbine shootings, the Son of Sam, as well as Jeffrey Dahmer, had histories of animal abuse as children. The evidence of a link between cruelty to animals and violence toward humans is compelling. In fact, people who abuse animals are five times more likely to commit violent crime. In 88% of the families where an animal is abused, the children are also being abused. WHS does have educational programs to end the cycle of violence and to educate young people to appreciate cats and all living creatures.
Thankfully, Tiger has a second chance. See her at www.wihumane.org or stop in to visit this fantastic feline.

Thanks to a very loving guardian, Sammy and Adrian are still together - in their new home!
These two best friends have lived together their whole lives and we can't bear to split them up. Adrian and Sammy are looking for a loving guardian in search of a lot of love this winter. They are both 10 years old and fantastic pals.
Adopting two cats can be a great experience, especially because they often do better with the company of a friend. Contrary to popular belief, cats are quite social and not always as independent as some people think. Most cats like to have pals around the house and can get lonely if left alone for long periods of time. With cats like Sammy and Adrian, you know that they'll get along great and keep each other company while you're at work or away. Sammy and Adrian also play together, burning energy and keeping fit and healthy. A paper grocery bag, a few catnip mouses and perhaps a glitter ball will keep the entire household entertained all night! Watching these two furry friends play is hilarious... they definitely bring out each other's silly side!
Like all the cats at WHS, Sammy and Adrian have been neutered or spayed, microchipped and vaccinated. They come with a certificate for a free veterinary exam and 30 days of pet health insurance. The fees for adult cats are waived. Check them out at www.wihumane.org.

UPDATE! OATMEAL IS THRIVING IN HIS NEW HOME... AND HIS GUARDIAN IS A REAL FIREFIGHTER!
Oatmeal is the sweetest boy you could possibly imagine, plus he's got the cutest spots ever! This Dalmation is amazingly gentle, polite and well-behaved. He's 10 years old and looking for a retirement home where he'll be loved and taken care of. A brief daily walk will suffice for Oatmeal and he'd love a soft bed and some toys to play with! Give him a little affection and Oatmeal will provide you with loving companionship and be your friend forever.
Open your heart to this senior dog today by checking out his profile at wihumane.org. He's also housetrained, well-socialized and LOVES to be brushed.

Sierra is a calm dog with a very sweet, loving personality. This 6 year old American Pit Bull Terrier mix is happy to relax quietly with her family and would just as soon watch sports on TV than chase a ball herself. Sierra does enjoy short walks, but is not dog who needs to run for miles everyday. If you have a relaxed, low-key lifestyle and a lot of love to give, then this beautiful girl just may be your perfect match. Check her out at wihumane.org.

Some of the Cedarburg cats are up for adoption at ozaukeehumane.org. See them on the website under "Available Cats."
The Ozaukee Humane Society, WHS' sister shelter, has rescued 97 cats from a home in Cedarburg. At least a dozen other cats were found dead, but fortunately, many are now in the care of shelter staff at OHS. The cats range in age from 4 weeks old to several years and nearly all have various infections and medical ailments. The cats had been living in deplorable conditions. If you'd like to read more about the story or make a donation to help save these neglected felines, go to http://www.ozaukeehumane.org/.

UPDATE: Little General met a nice family from Franklin, who adopted him this weekend. Congrats!
This Little General certainly won't order you around! This adorable Boston Terrier has the sweetest expressions in the whole word, plus a personality to match! At 8-years-old, he is a true gentleman who is seeking a quiet household to call his own. Our volunteers report that this little guy is obviously looking for affection; with a little reassurance and positive reinforcement, he opens up to everyone. Little General enjoys treats and is very eager to earn them. He will make a great companion for some very lucky family. Check him out at www.wihumane.org today!

UPDATE: JUNIOR WAS ADOPTED IN TIME TO CELEBRATE ST PADDY'S IN A NEW HOME! HOORAY! (and time to buy stock in a tennis ball manufacturer)
Meet Junior. He may go home with that tennis ball because he seems to carry it everywhere he goes! This handsome 6-year-old lab has silly puppy energy and always greets you with a smile. And the tennis ball.
Junior is a strong, smart boy who will need daily exercise and an active guardian who is itching to get outside this spring. He loves to go for long walks, play fetch and greet passers-by. If you've been daydreaming about rollerblading through Lake Park, swimming at Harrington Beach or biking through the Menomonee River parkway, start picturing a big yellow lab in that vision. He's waiting for you at the Wisconsin Humane Society.
p.s. After a good bout of play, Junior adores having his tummy scratched!

UPDATE! This sweet dog went home to a great family thrilled with their new companion!
Mattie is an amazing dog. Not only is she absolutely adorable with her huge brown eyes and funny markings on her rump, she is wise beyond her 1.2 years. This lovely dog recently attended a special seminar with 100 human guests and she was the best behaved of everyone! She greeted each person with kisses, never barked during presentations and somehow had the self-control to avoid the cheese and avocado subs (although there is photographic evidence that her human cohorts tossed some provolone her way)!

Mattie sees the tasty cheese subs, but remembers her etiquette.
Mattie is a 1 year old American Pitbull Terrier mix. She is gentle, affectionate and eager to please. Mattie already knows how to sit, shake and stay. In addition, she has been previously housetrained. Mattie would do great with a loving guardian who can spend time playing outside, hanging out on the couch or simply going for a car ride, which Mattie loves.

Tinsel is a blast. He's one of the funniest souls you've ever met and he thinks life is just awesome. You'll feel such joy introducing this 8-month-old black Labrador Retriever mix to new situations and people. He will renew your appreciation for the little things - perfect blades of grass on which to munch, sparrows perched on telephone wires, the sound of the school bus turning the corner - Tinsel notices everything and is fascinated by anything.
Tinsel is looking for a guardian with a good arm and a big supply of tennis balls. Although if you don’t have any tennis balls, he would probably settle for plush toys, or Frisbees, or squeakers, or well, you get the idea. Tinsel loves toys! The only thing that Tinsel likes better than playing with his toys, is playing with his toys with you.
He would also appreciate a tunmy rub every now and then. And some treats. Oh, and a sense of humor is a must, for this little guy will definitely try to entertain you with his silly antics.
Every dog at the Wisconsin Humane Society is spayed/neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. Dogs and cats also go home with a free vet exam and 30 days of pet health insurance. Fill out an adoption application online and see all our available animals!

When you meet Murphy, you'll fall into a laughing fit. This dog is such a happy, exuberant fellow that his enthusiasm for life is contagious. He has a stocky golden body, dense coat and always-wagging tail. At 8-months-old, this Labrador Retriever/Chow Chow mix is at a great age. Murphy loves to meet new people and eagerly eats up all the attention he can get. He's fond of stretching out on the floor to invite a belly rub, too!
This bouncy dog, both physically and personality-wise, will be a joy to train, too. He's curious, confident and happy. It may be gray and cold outside, but Murphy will bring the sunshine into your heart.

There are lots of fuzzy puppies up for adoption right now at WHS! Spring season is here and if you've been thinking about a new addition to your family, it's a great time of year to housetrain, establish good walking habits and enroll in a puppy class with your young pal. Check out all the young pups (and older dogs, too) at WHS. The website is updated every 30 minutes!
Don't forget to look at the calendar, too, for all the cool, affordable classes you can take. Aside from the myriad of dog/cat classes, there are some excellent birding seminars in April.

Meet Mae. She's the kind of girl willing to throw all caution against the wind and propel herself through the air, across the room and into unknown territory simply to catch that sneaky catnip mouse. Mae is also a very lovely feline with round emerald eyes and a dense tiger-striped coat. She's a healthy weight and maintains her figure by practicing gymnastics.
Like all adult cats at WHS, the fee for Mae is waived. Still, we've spayed, microchipped and vaccinated her. She also comes with a certificate for a free vet exam and one month of health insurance; Mae has been treated with a prescription medicine that protects against fleas, worms and other parasites, too. Mario met his match and went home last weekend with a great family!
Mario loves people. Of course, all dogs love their families, but Mario is the human population's #1 fan. If you and Mario work out as companions, then you'll have yourself a lifelong, devoted friend. Have you ever been the best thing that's happened to someone? That's how Mario will make you feel!
When you first meet him, he breaks out his goofy grin and invites you to play or cuddle - whichever you'd prefer. He loves attention and thrives on being in the company of others. He's a very social and playful pooch, but he's not overwhelmingly energetic. Mario adores getting belly rubs and returns the favor with kisses.
This 2 year old Shepherd/Chow Chow mix has a beautiful golden coat and lovely brown eyes. At 55 pounds, he's a great size and small enough to ride comfortably in the car with you. And believe us, you'll want to take this friendly guy with you everywhere this summer as you form a bond. (Don't forget his safety belt, though!)
Mario came to us as stray and upon his initial examination, it was found that Mario was heartworm positive. Fortunately, this sweet pup is now receiving life-saving treatment for the disease and looks forward to a brighter future. His new guardian will have to restrict excessive exercise and high activity for a while as he recovers, so someone with a good library of books or movies might just be Mario's ideal human. A supply of peanut butter-stuffed Kongs won't hurt, either. If you are seeking a lovable, huggable, snuggable pal, look no further than this happy dog. Check him out at wihumane.org.

You may not be able to tell from her photos, but Amelia is nearly 100 lbs... of pure love! She's what dog people call a "leaner," a dog who loves to brush up against you and lean into your body, wanting to be as close to you as possible. Amelia loves to be cuddled, brushed, nuzzled and given belly rubs. At 3.5 years old, this Labrador Retriever/American Pit Bull Terrier prefers praise over toys and slow walks over triathalons. She likes to play with the occasional plush toy but isn't very fond of fetching or aerobic exercise.
Despite her fondness for the low key lifestyle, Amelia is in great shape and has a gorgeous, shiny black coat with unique white patches on her chest and paws. Amelia is also very bright and enjoys learning new tricks. She'll be a star in Manner's Class and already knows "sit" and "down."

Baby is as sweet as can be. She will greet you with a smile and insist that she snuggle in your lap.
This 7.5-year-old Siamese cat will also gently nudge your hand to encourage you to pet her. In addition to her sparkling personality, Baby has beautiful cream and black fur. Her luminous blue eyes are stunning and they will sparkle even more when she gets adopted!
At nearly 8 years old, Baby no longer has the kitten crazies and mostly likes to watch the world from a very comfortable place! Whether napping on her right side or left side, this relaxed, confident cat will always invite you for a good cuddling session! Ursula is like a giant puppy. Happy, energetic, curious and loving, this black Labrador Retriever will have you laughing several times a day. She is 4 years young and wants to play and run all morning long, then flop on her doggie bed for a nap. She's a riot to hang out with and performs silly antics. A good teacher will have no trouble teaching Ursula new skills and manners; she'd love to enroll in a manners class where she could show off her skills, too!
Just like her personality, Ursula's appearance is vibrant. Bright eyes, floppy tongue, strong physique and sleek coat characterize this pooch. Her large features and floppity ears give her a slightly comic countenance. When she cocks her head after hearing a foreign sound, it's simply irresistible.

Comet has one of those amazing personalities. He's a confident, up-front kind of guy who immediately comes up and introduces himself. He seems to be oblivious that he's so handsome and unique-looking. His markings include blue patches of fur that create cool shapes on his back. Comet's face looks like it's been painted!
Comet was previously declawed, so it's especially imperative that he always stays indoors where he'll be safe. He seems to get along well with his roommate and would likely adjust fine to a home with another cat. This photo, actually, was taken when Comet was concerned about a little kitten meowing next door (the kitty was a bit lonely because her sister had just been adopted, but she went home moments later, so no worries!). Still, Comet stood up on his hind legs to make sure she was okay!
Comet's benevolence and compassion really shines through and he'll delight his new guardian with his incredible personality. Read our adoption guidelines at www.wihumane.org and stop in soon!

Bongo never pounds on the drums or makes much noise, except for the occasional squeal of delight when you allow him to climb onto your lap for a intensive belly rub session! It's surprising that this stunning Australian Shepherd mix is only 7 months old, because he has a rather mature disposition. He's thoughtful, kind and always polite with strangers. He's curious but cautious in his explorations around our neighborhood and doesn't pull hard on the leash or jump up on strangers. Bongo always delights in returning to his suite for a cuddling session afterwards, too!
Check Bongo out online at www.wihumane.org/animals/dogs or stop in to visit! The website is updated every 30 minutes, so you can always see who is available before you drop in. You can also bring your own dog to meet Bongo during a dog introduction at WHS before adopting, as well.

Sarah's sea blue eyes are absolutely captivating, especially against her snow white fur. This 2-year-old Siberian Husky mix doesn't just depend on her good looks, though! She is a very intelligent, curious and social girl. Sarah is thrilled to get visitors and loves to walk in the spring sunshine. Sarah came to us as a stray and she's hoping to start a new life with an active family or guardian interested in training, exercising and bonding with their new pal! Siberian Huskies often do well with other dogs because they are so social and friendly, so Sarah might be a great dog to have your own pup meet! Bring him or her down to WHS for a doggie intro on neutral ground. See www.wihumane.org for more details.

Dreamer is a sweet 11-year-old Brown and White Tabby cat who greets all visitors with lots of chin rubs. This striking feline has the most unusually-shaped green eyes that have amazing flecks of color. You simply must see this unique cat in person!
Dreamer prefers the company of people over toys, but is eager to accept the occasional salmon treat. She also enjoys lots of petting, particularly right behind her ears and on her forehead. Affectionate and gentle, Dreamer has a great personality.
True to her name, Dreamer also enjoys a quiet afternoon lounging near her window, watching the hustle and bustle from the comfort of indoors. Could she be your dream girl? Check her out at wihumane.org. Our website is updated every 30 minutes!
P.S. This weekend, Dreamer watched the storms roll through Milwaukee, thankfully safe and sound inside her suite. In an emergency, how would you evacuate your animals? Have you considered the supplies and documents that you should have on hand if such an event occurred? Check out a comprehensive checklist for emergency evacuation plans that will help you keep your furry family members safe in an emergency.

Alfie has a lot going for him: charm, charisma, good looks and warm brown eyes that will melt your heart. He doesn't have a family to call his own, though, so this 8 1/2 year old Shetland Sheepdog/Terrier mix waits patiently for someone who will cherish all he has to offer. When you visit Alfie, he's apt to roll over on your lap, inviting a belly rub. Extremely affectionate, Alfie will keep you company on the couch and will likely bond quickly with his new family.
A senior dog like Alfie is a great option for a lot of people. Senior dogs have personalities that are much more established than a puppy's; seniors are often housetrained and sometimes know cues like "sit," "down" and "come." Best of all, many seniors, like Aflie, don't have crazy puppy energy and prefer strolls around the block to running 5 miles at dawn! Although he's 8 1/2, Alfie is in great health and looks forward to spending many years taking fun walks, playing with squeaky toys and watching movies with you!

Roxie will have your neighbors all inquiring about your stunning new family member. This Labrador Retriever/German Shepherd mix has a gorgeous, shiny black coat with beautiful beige and brown markings. Her chocolate brown eyes will melt your heart, especially if accompanied by her ears perking up! Roxie knows cues such as "sit" and "down"; she will likely learn new skills very fast.
Roxie is a fun, happy girl who appreciates a tennis ball with a good bounce to it. At only 1.5 years old, she thinks everything is fun, interesting and needs to be played with - especially you! With her own brand of surprises, life with Roxie will keep you constantly on your toes; the fun is guaranteed. Like all the dogs at WHS, Roxie has been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.

Billy, Rocky and Tom aren't all brothers, but they sure do play hard and nap harder! These adorable kittens, who range in age from 10-12 weeks, are just a few of the many young cats available for adoption right now at WHS. Summer is always a very busy time for cats and kittens and this year is no exception. Every day, new kittens arrive at the shelter, seeking a second chance. Thankfully, there are many adopters in the community looking to open their hearts and homes to sweet kitties like Billy, Rocky and Tom. Would you like to meet this terrific trio? The Wisconsin Humane Society reached an agreement to obtain and close the largest dog breeding facility in Wisconsin, ‘Puppy Haven.’ Nearly 1,200 dogs will be brought to WHS to start on the right path to a happy future. Although many of the dogs were healthy enough to go into adoption right after spay/neuter surgery, and more than 100 have been adopted in the past few days, others need extra help.
Meet Brigid and Jeffy, two beautiful dogs who are currently in our care, awaiting surgery that will help keep them on four legs! Jeffy is just a baby - a mere 12 weeks - and Brigid is a 1-year-old sweetheart whose tendency to nuzzle your neck makes your heart melt. Read their full story here.

The transformations are remarkable, both physically and behaviorally! The dogs from Puppy Haven Kennels arrive every week looking forward to a brighter future. As we bring the dogs to WHS, we find that these dogs have extraordinary needs. They have never had a toy, a treat or their own bed. They've never experienced the joy of human companionship. They require extra time, patience and a large amount of TLC to help them come out of their shells and start experiencing the life of love that they so deeply deserve. Meet Deb, a dreamer of a dog who loves to watch the world from the comfort of cool tile on hot summer days! This sweetheart Cocker Spaniel is just 6 years old and is one of the 1,200 dogs rescued from Puppy Haven Kennels and brought to WHS. She is experiencing new things everyday - the feel of grass beneath her feet, squeaky toys, ear scratches, a name of her own and the pride of wearing a brand new collar! Deb will be a devoted, loving companion to a family or person who can help her build her confidence with positive reinforcement and encouragement. Check out Deb's profile page at WHS!

Are you looking for a special someone who is quiet and considerate? Someone who will give you his utmost attention but won't be overly demanding?
Mugsy is a 7-year-old mellow-mannered British Shorthair mix who prefers quiet time and soft touches. He's a great listener and would love to hear all about your day. He is never pushy or impolite and will wait patiently for attention. You might say he's a true British gentleman! He would be happiest in a calm home with a gentle, patient family. BJ and PeeWee are 8-year-old Schipperkes who are seeking a family with room for two! These inseparable sisters will keep you laughing as they play together with their favorite squeaky toys. At 8-years-old, they already know the ropes and understand basic cues like "sit" and "come." You'd never guess that they are 8-years-old, despite the cute gray beards they've both developed. These two are quite spunky, outgoing and play off each other's energy in very silly displays of play.
We don't want to separate these constant companions, so they must go home together! Like all the dogs available at WHS, BJ and PeeWee have been spayed, microchipped, vaccinated and go home with a certificate for a free veterinary exam, in addition to 30 days of Sheltercare Pet Insurance. Calvin and Hobbes will exceed your every expectation when you visit them at WHS. Large in both size and personality, it's hard not to fall for these confident, affectionate and outgoing cats. Hobbes has a luxurious coat of thick fur, so perhaps that's why he's first to greet you at the door. This kitty LOVES being groomed and will need brushing to keep his coat healthy and shiny. Calvin is never far behind Hobbes and will eagerly crawl into your lap for chin rubs and neck scratches.
These amazing cats have lived together their whole lives and have formed a deep bond of love and friendship. We don't want to split them up. Do you have the room in your heart and home for two? See them at www.wihumane.org.

Cruise on down to Pier Wisconsin for a lovely evening of good cheer and good deeds for our four-legged friends. Benefiting the Wisconsin and Ozaukee Humane Societies, the Paws & Claws Gala will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2008.
Emceed by The Biggest Name in Milwaukee Radio, Phil Cianciola from 620 WTMJ, the annual fundraiser for the Wisconsin Humane Society boasts an impressive array of silent and live auction items, Bartolotta’s finest fare and live music. You’ll meet cats in ball gowns and dogs in tuxedos! There’s even a raffle and the top prize is sensational!
Although Brodhi, above, is enjoying his ride, we bet you’ll have even more fun on this 105th Anniversary Harley Dyna Low Rider. Not only is it stunning, it promises a little piece of heaven as you leave your cares behind and head out on the open road. You’ll be the envy of all your neighbors. You might even be able to charge admission to your garage. And the raffle ticket is only $5.
Gala tickets are still available. Treat yourself to a doggone good time.
Admission tickets are $250/person and $500/couple; all proceeds help the Wisconsin and Ozaukee Humane Societies in their efforts to save animals’ lives. For more information, visit www.wihumane.org or www.ozaukeehumane.org. You can also call (414) 431-6121 for more information on purchasing tickets.

Meet two very special cats. Antony, a British Shorthair and Cleopatra, a Maine Coon mix, are both 8 1/2 years old. They are also best friends and we want to find them a home for two!
He's not really Roman and she's never been to Cairo, but Antony and Cleopatra deserve to be treated like royalty. This sweet-natured pair are loving, affectionate and stunning. Cleopatra loves attention, especially in the form of snuggling. Upon first meeting, she is apt to crawl into your lap and roll upside down for a belly rub. Her thick black fur is luxuriously soft and she will need frequent grooming in her new home. Antony is slightly more reserved, but he warms up once he sees that you're trustworthy. Antony loves head rubs and chin scratches, in particular. He's a large fellow with rather luminous green eyes and beautifully patterned coat.
Antony and Cleo are best buddies and have lived together their whole lives. We don't want to split them up, so we're looking for a family seeking double the love! Do they sound like a good fit for you? Click here to learn more!

Are you looking for someone to cuddle up with this autumn? This winter? For many years to come?
Pumpkin is a festive red and white Tabby looking for a good home. An eight-month-old Domestic Shorthair who loves to play, Pumpkin is always up for fun. He likes spending his time fooling around with his favorite toy, a cat charmer. Even more than playing, Pumpkin loves to gaze out the window and watch the leaves fall. Perhaps Pumpkin could be the autumn-loving match for you! Like all of the cats at the Wisconsin Humane Society, Pumpkin has been neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and tested for feline Leukemia. Stop by the Wisconsin Humane Society at 4500 West Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee to meet Pumpkin or learn more here.

The WHS Halloween Parade is one of several fun events offered at the Wisconsin Humane this month. October is Adopt-a-Dog Month and the Wisconsin and Ozaukee Humane Societies are hoping to place 500 dogs in new homes in just 31 days! Many of the dogs available for adoption are some of the last remaining that were rescued from Puppy Haven Kennels, the largest breeding facility in Wisconsin, when WHS closed the operation to find good homes for them.

Molly and her five baby kittens were among fourteen cats surrendered by a single family this week to the Wisconsin Humane Society. The 5-week-old black and white kittens are named Pumpkin, Elvira, Boo, Candy Corn and Casper. The kittens and their mother will go into foster care until they are old enough for adoption; the other adult cats will be spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated before becoming available.
The Wisconsin Humane Society has noticed a sharp increase in overall animal surrenders the last few weeks. Nearly 200 more animals were surrendered in September 2008 than in September 2007 and like all fourteen of the cats surrendered, many of them have never been spayed or neutered, thus contributing to the pet overpopulation problem.
There are many cats and kittens looking for new homes this weekend. The Wisconsin Humane Society is open Tuesday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Visit www.wihumane.org for more information!

Betsey is wondering why you haven't visited her yet!
She's not only charming, but this 3-year-old Beagle has chocolate brown eyes that will warm your heart. Naturally curious, Betsey is really starting to blossom after spending many years in the largest breeding facility in Wisconsin with thousands of other dogs. She likes to investigate everything from fallen autumn leaves to interesting textures in the dirt and grass. To Betsey, everything is a new phenomenon worthy of serious study! Oh, and she loves to cuddle after a nice walk in the woods, especially on a warm lap! Interested? See her and all the dogs at www.wihumane.org/animals/dogs.

Carlos is no ordinary small animal. He's a fluffy, cute-as-a-button, 10-week-old Abyssinian Guinea Pig! This handsome little guy is one of many amazing small animals currently available for adoption at WHS. See sweet gerbils, rabbits, mice, parakeets, hamsters, rats and even chinchillas at WHS today. Live in a small apartment? Allergic to cats? Don't have time to walk a dog every day? Consider a more petite pal like Carlos. Sure to keep your lap warm in the winter, a guinea pig like Carlos will also warm your heart. Visit www.wihumane.org/smallanimals to learn more about Carlos and his buddies.

Charmed by Stormy’s radiant amber eyes? Captivated by Stormy’s black and white coat? It's hard to pass by his suite without noticing this striking, handsome dog. His personality, however, is what will warm your heart. Stormy’s warm demeanor will melt away any winter blues. This handsome gentleman would be just right for curling up on the couch after a day of playing in the snow.
Stormy is an intelligent six-year-old Siberian Husky. This well-behaved male is partial to belly rubs and plenty of chin scratches, especially after some time outdoors. He would do great with someone who regularly exercises and truly enjoys bonding over a game of fetch. Huskies are great jogging companions and Stormy is no exception, especially considering how wonderfully he walks on a leash.

Looking for a puppy, like Poco? He'll melt away your winter blues, keep you fit all year round and brighten up every morning with exuberant kisses. It's a joy to raise a puppy into a happy adult and there is no better time to adopt than right now! Poco, an 8-week-old Labrador Retriever mix, is among many other puppies hoping to find homes for the holidays.
The Wisconsin Humane Society hopes that if you are looking for a puppy or younger dog, you'll check out local shelters and rescue groups in lieu of heading to the pet store. Most puppies at large pet stores come from large-scale breeding facilities that ignore the social, emotional and physical needs of dogs. The pups may look cute, but their parents are suffering back at the mill. Don't support this cycle! Adopt a shelter dog and save more than one life.
Check out all the available puppies and dogs at the Wisconsin Humane Society, 4500 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee. To learn more about puppy mills, click here.

Move over, Lassie! Here comes Marley!
On Saturday, December 13 and Saturday, December 14, all shelter guests will have a chance to spin the wheel and win either a free Marley & Me poster or movie pass for a special screening at Mayfair Mall on Thursday, December 18. Stop by this weekend to see adoptable animals, visit Wally’s Workbench, or pick up holiday gifts from Animal Antics. The Wisconsin Humane Society finds homes for 9,000 animals every year and we’re hoping to find homes for many great companions this holiday season.

Hundreds of animals are up for adoption at the Wisconsin Humane Society, so we’ve expanded hours to include a Monday in December, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. This time of year, the shelter is eager to place animals in homes for the holiday season and even offers a “Gift of Companionship” program.
Contrary to popular belief, research shows that people who receive a companion animal as a gift make great guardians. Animals are no more or less likely to be returned than animals adopted by the guardians themselves. Gift adoptions include the companion animal and a $25 certificate redeemable within two weeks after the gift giving date at Animal Antics, the retail store located within WHS. Those interested in gift adoptions must provide specific information about the recipient so counselors can match all personalities involved. WHS also follows up with adopters and continues to provide support and assistance to ensure a happy match.
Please note the additional holiday hours:

Chi Chi is hoping that 2009 is a better year. When she was brought to WHS, she looked so sad. She had great trouble walking due to a problem with her kneecaps and her family left her at WHS in hopes that we could return her to good health and better spirits.
Chi Chi, a 6-year-old Dachshund, was given a full medical exam upon her arrival and we discovered that she had heartworm disease. For many weeks, she needs to remain inactive as her system expells the worms. Exertion can cause the dead worms to dislodge, pass to the lungs and cause respiratory failure or even death. Without the discovery of Chi Chi's heartworm disease, she would have surely died at a very young age.
The little cuddler's delicate kneecaps also slipped and slided out of place, making walking an arduous task. A specialist performed surgery on her legs to correct the condition. Her little bones have been secured with metal pins to expedite a speedy recovery. She is currently getting extra special attention and love as she heals in our clinic.
Can you help with a donation to fund her care? WHS receives no government funding to provide care for dogs like Chi Chi. You can even sponsor Chi Chi as a gift for someone else. For more info, click here.

Larry always turns heads when people first meet him! It's impossible to miss his distinctive patch of caramel-colored fur surrounding his cute little mouth. Did you notice his blue front paws, too? He's donning Softclaws, little plastic claw covers that protect furniture from cat scratches. We chose Larry to model Softclaws simply because he is a very affectionate, patient cat. Larry loves all the attention he can get.
